He has tied himself to a sacred tree, its roots dig deep into the earth, boring into the realms of the underworld, and branches reaching out to the mysterious realms that lie beyond knowledge. He pierces his side as an offering to the gods and in return is rewarded with understanding beyond anyone’s imagination. Here we witness divine sacrifice.
